Yeast infections are often characterized by redness and itchiness in the affected area. You face a lot of difficulty in going about your daily work because of severe itchiness in the groin area. Yeast Infections

It is commonly believed that yeast infections are exclusive to women. This, however, is a gross misconception. Yeast infections can occur in both men and women.

A yeast infection is a very common type of infection; nearly seventy-five percent of all women get a yeast infection at least once in their lives, and at least half of all women have had multiple infections. The fungus that causes yeast infection is present in everybody, and its growth is being regulated by bacteria that are also naturally present in the body. A slight disruption in this balance can cause the yeast to rapidly grow unregulated, which ultimately is the cause of the infection.

There are many contributing factors that may cause the disruption of the bacterial balance in the genital area. Overusing antibiotics is a common cause of yeast infections; the antibiotics will not only kill the bad bacteria, but it will also kill the good bacteria that regulate the yeast in your body. Killing these good bacteria will allow the yeast to grow unregulated, causing an infection. Change in hormone levels can also contribute to the formation of a yeast infection by changing the pH balance of the vaginal area. If the genital area becomes too acidic the bacterial balance could be disrupted.

Symptoms of this infection include itching and a burning sensation in the genital area, a white discharge that looks like cottage cheese, pain during intercourse, and swelling of the vulva.

Yeast infections are usually treated with antifungal medications. If you are suffering from your first yeast infection, it would be a good idea to see your doctor. It is important to have a proper diagnosis before beginning an antifungal treatment. Taking antifungal mediation when unnecessary can cause the yeast to develop a resistance to the medication. So it is important to only take medicine when suffering from a yeast infection.

What is a Yeast Infection?

Posted by ctp5182 On October - 31 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

What is a yeast infection? The medical term which describes it is called candidiasis. It is a fungal infection (or mycosis) of any of the candida fungal species with the candida albicans being the most common. Varying types of candidiasis range from vaginitis, oral thrush as well as an infection of the penis. Severe and life threatening forms are considered systemic and can affect people who have immune issues such as AIDS/HIV, cancer, or organ transplant patients. This article will describe some common causes of a yeast infection as well as some recommended treatments.

Causes Of A Yeast Infection
People with weak immune systems or metabolic diseases (such as diabetes) are at risk for candidiasis. Common diseases that make a person at risk for a yeast infection include AIDS/HIV, cancer treatments, stress, steroids, mononucleosis. In other cases infections of the mucous membranes or the skin can enter the bloodstream and cause a systemic candida infection. For men who have a penile yeast infection, the cause is usually from sexual relations with an affected woman, overuse of antibiotics or diabetes. There are only a fraction of penile candida infection outbreaks compared to those of a women, however. Excess sugar in the body can also cause yeast outbreaks. This is a common problem with diabetics or pre-diabetics as they often have difficulty keeping their blood glucose levels at proper levels that are needed for an optimal balance of yeast. Overuse of antibiotics can also contribute to a yeast outbreak as antibiotics kill ‘good’ bacteria that is also needed to keep yeast at optimal levels.

Symptoms Of A Yeast Infection
Symptoms of candidiasis may vary depending on the which type you have. If the infection is vaginal, the female genital area will suffer soreness, irritation, burning, or itching along with a white cottage cheese discharge that frequently smells. Symptoms of a penile yeast candida infection include lesions and sores at the head of the penis or foreskin along with burning and severe itching. Men can also experience a white discharge from their penis. A male yeast infection, however does not emit an odor (unlike that of a woman). Symptoms of thrush include sores in the mouth along with a white filmy coating on the tongue, gums and roof of the mouth (or palate). In severe cases of thrush, sores, blisters and lesions can travel further down in the mouth affecting the tonsils, throat and esophagus.

Yeast Infection – 4 Tips to Avoid Yeast Infection

Posted by ctp5182 On October - 21 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

Yeast infection is basically caused due to overgrowth of fungus called Candida Albicans in the body. The magnitude of the problem is evident from the fact that most women develop at least one yeast infection in their lifetime. Not only females, men and kids too can fall prey to the epidemic.

Read on to find 4 simple tips to avoid these infections from affecting your life:

1. Wear Natural Fabrics

Natural fabric clothing allows the passage of air to keep the yeast from overgrowing. Wearing breathable cotton undergarments is basic to avoid overgrowth of these fungi.

2. Avoid Douching

Vaginal hygiene sprays or douches increase the risk of your falling prey to yeast infection. One must also refrain from the use of deodorant tampons.

3. Maintain Proper Hygiene Levels

The key lies in avoiding the introduction of bacteria into the vagina. Changing of damp or gym clothes as soon as possible, drying properly after bathing and especially keeping the vaginal area clean and dry are important things that must be paid attention to.

4. Avoid Prolonged Use Of Antibiotics

Prolonged use of antibiotics and steroids to cure diabetes, during pregnancy or immune-comprised situations like cancer treatments or HIV infection also prove to be vulnerable conditions for the yeast to grow abnormally.

High carbohydrate intake also needs to be avoided to prevent this infection. Taking these simple precautions can guard you against falling for the condition and help you lead a healthy and fuss-free life. By following these tips, you can avoid as well as heal your prolonged yeast infection.

Yeast infections in pregnancy are an unwelcome intrusion in what should be a happy time of anticipation. Having the painful and irritating symptoms of vaginal thrush to cope with as well as everything else going on adds another burden.

Tell tale symptoms may include itching, soreness and discharge.

The fact is that Yeast infections can affect a woman at any time in her life but are more common in pregnancy. Doctors say that this is due to hormonal changes that are expected during pregnancy.

One of the risk factors for yeast in pregnancy is diabetes and the blood sugar changes in pregnancy too and this is a factor that you can exert some control over.

How? Through your diet..

Your diet is a major contributor to how much your blood sugar changes or how stable it is whether you are pregnant or not and whether you are diabetic or not.

Eating sugar or drinking sugary drinks makes the blood sugar rise very quickly and then fall very quickly and it is the rapid rise and fall that seems to cause most problems for people who suffer from diabetes and hypoglycaemia.

A diet that takes account of the effect on blood sugar can make an important contribution to how quickly you recover from a Yeast infection although other natural non drug remedies may be needed as well.

Making simple and sensible changes to your diet is best done with a knowledgeable health professional trained in Nutritional Medicine but you can get some ideas from health books too.

Using natural remedies to help to clear up yeast symptoms safely and quickly at no risk to your or your baby makes a lot of sense.

Yeast Infections in Children

Posted by ctp5182 On October - 7 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

Yeast infection in children and infants usually manifest in the vaginal (vaginitis) or rectal area (diaper rash, pruritis ani, or hemorrhoids).

They can usually be treated successfully by changing to a high-fiber diet and using natural remedies, especially lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus. Spir-ulina, chlorella, barley green, and other green foods are easy to take for infants and children and are good immune system boosters. Topically, creams containing calendula, zinc oxide, and aloe vera are often effective.

The usual cause of the yeast infection in children is the high sugar intake found in commercial infant formulas or “unsweetened” fruit juices. Even if juices are freshly squeezed and consumed immediately, the average glass of apple or orange juice has the equivalent of five or more teaspoons of sugar.

Cow’s milk, soy milk, rice milk, and even goat’s milk can increase the total daily sugar intake to fungal growth-stimulating levels in susceptible individuals. Switch to water until the infection clears, then use these beverages sparingly, if at all for older children For infants, switch to yeast-free, sugar-free formula and rotate types of milk.

In the case of vaginal yeast infection in children, make sure that underpants are loose and allow the passage of oxygen. Fungi are difficult to eradicate from underwear even if they are machine-washed with detergents.

In persistent, recurrent vaginal yeast infections, placing the moistened underwear in a microwave oven and turning the setting to high for five minutes destroys all traces of the yeast infection. Placing underwear on a clothesline in the sun for one hour will also kill Candida. Sitz baths with Epsom salts or magnesium sulfate are soothing for the inflammation, often the cause of severe itching in Candida vaginitis.

Echinacea, goldenseal, calendula, ginger, pau d’arco, and aloe vera can be consumed in liquid form as herbal juices or tinctures. Lactobacillus products can be taken in a powdered form, as can buffered vitamin C.

Children often seem to respond better to homeopathic remedies like cantheris (123 or 6C) and sulfur (303 or 9C) taken three or more times daily.

Recurrent or resistant yeast infection in children should alert one to the possibility of an underlying diabetes or immune system problem. A medical doctor can order appropriate tests that confirm or rule out underlying diseases requiring medical treatment.

Yeast Infections: Ancient Microbes, Modern Plague

Posted by ctp5182 On September - 29 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

Yeast infections have been around since ancient times. Although ancient healers couldn’t identify Candida as the organism most often responsible for yeast infections, they were able to successfully treat yeast infections using herbs with natural anti-fungal properties. Microscopic fungi like Candida have always thrived, but yeast infections in humans were rare until modern times when two major factors set the stage to make yeast overgrowth in America as common as apple pie:

1. Antibiotics – The overuse of antibiotics is a major cause of yeast infections and other forms of fungal overgrowth. Modern antibiotics don’t discriminate between the pathogens they target and the beneficial microorganisms or probiotics that normally inhabit the gut in large numbers.

When the delicate balance of essential flora in the GI tract is disturbed, yeasts and other pathogens are quick to capitalize on the opportunity to multiply. Left to flourish untreated, candida can invade the intestinal walls, breaking them down until they begin to leak harmful bacteria and larger proteins into the blood stream. The resulting long term “leaky gut” toxicity and constant immune system burden can have devastating consequences to your health.

2. Refined Carbohydrates – Our high carb diet alters pH levels, lowers baseline immunity, and directly feeds the cycle of yeast infection in our bodies.

Types of Yeast Infection

There are more than 20 species of Candida, the most common being Candida Albicans. These fungi live on all surfaces of our bodies. Under certain conditions, they can become so numerous they cause infections, particularly in warm and moist areas. Examples of such infections are vaginal yeast infections, thrush (infection in the mouth), skin outbreaks and diaper rash, sinus and nail bed infections. Rarely, the infection may spread throughout the body. Most people do not survive systemic infections because of the massive amount of inflammation and toxicity produced.

Underlying Causes of Yeast Infection

Like antibiotics, corticosteroids also deplete the body of beneficial bacteria and undermine baseline immunity, encouraging the overgrowth of yeast. Birth control pills can also promote yeast infections.

A number of factors influence the body’s ability to directly or indirectly control Candida overgrowth:

• Mineral Imbalance or Deficiency – Trace minerals like zinc and copper are essential to the body’s ability to keep yeast under control.

• Stress impairs immune system function and depletes the body of essential minerals.

• Excessive Alkalinity favors yeast overgrowth. Adrenal exhaustion and thyroid insufficiency contribute to increased alkalinity.

• Heavy Metal Toxicity – Candida sufferers often have high levels of mercury, lead or cadmium in their tissues. Hair analysis can be helpful in identifying toxicities.

• Inadequate Cellular Energy Production – Biochemical energy is required for all body functions, including immune system function, and all other body systems.

• Impaired Short-chain fatty Acid Metabolism – Short-chain fatty acids are protective compounds that are manufactured as a byproduct of normal metabolism. Caprylic and butyric acid are frequently used as anti-fungal agents. Hair analysis and Organic Acid Testing can be helpful in identifying deficiencies.

• Thyroid Suppression is both a cause and a symptom of yeast infection because of its role in impaired immunity and energy production. Candida overgrowth in turn causes a buildup of mycotoxins that suppress thyroid function.

Symptoms of Yeast Infection

Symptoms of candidiasis can vary widely depending upon where the infection takes hold, from vaginal itching, burning and discharge to allergies and skin disorders to brain fog, thyroid and immune suppression, sugar cravings and chronic fatigue.

Some natural practitioners estimate that because of the factors mentioned above, 70-80% of Americans are dealing with some form of fungal overgrowth. Don Dennis, MD, Board Certified EENT and plastic surgeon in Atlanta claims that fungal infection accounts for the suffering of a vast majority of chronic sinusitis patients. According to Dr. Dennis, “Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS) affects over 37 million Americans, making it more common than arthritis or high blood pressure.”

Most CRS patients, like virtually all sufferers of chronic fungal infection, are caught up in an endless and seemingly hopeless cycle of infection and secondary reinfection with repeated antibiotic and steroid exposures that lead to its familiar pattern of symptoms.

Cancer Connection

Many practitioners are convinced that yeast overgrowth plays a central role in the growth of many cancers because of the toxic burden and oxidative stress it places on the body… not to mention the estrogenic effect of mycotoxins, the pirating of valuable cellular resources or the consequences of an overwhelmed immune system. Having a chronic yeast infection is like trying to row a boat with the anchor out!

Morgellons Connection

Similarly, fungal overgrowth appears to be a common factor among sufferers of Morgellons Disease, a horrific and increasingly common condition that involves immune compromise and failure of the bioterrain with multiple infections and infestations with plant and soil based pathogens that don’t normally affect humans. The greatest danger of chronic yeast infection may be that it sets the table for secondary opportunistic infections.

Treatment of Yeast Infections

Mild cases of yeast infection are easily treated, but successful treatment of chronic candidiasis requires time, patience, determination and a multifaceted approach. There are five critical areas of intervention that are required to root out entrenched yeast infection in the body:

1. Diet – Anyone who has endured marathon struggles with candida overgrowth can attest to the difficulty of displacing established fungal infections, especially when underlying challenges such as heavy metal toxicity provide favorable conditions even when stringent dietary restrictions are followed. But the fact is, without a proper diet, there is virtually no hope of breaking out of the cycle of infection and reinfection. Basically, we need to eat what God has provided… a diet of veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, and whole grains, while limiting meat and dairy and avoiding anything processed… especially refined carbs.

2. Restore Digestion – Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes are necessary to restore adequate numbers of beneficial bacteria to the GI tract and improve digestive efficiency. Enzymes also help control yeast directly and perform a “house cleaning” function in the body. Hydrochloric acid (Betaine HCL) can also be helpful in restoring pH levels and improving protein and mineral absorption.

A broad spectum, high potency probiotic is very effective in restoring balance to essential flora in the gut. Don’t fall for the sales hype about enteric coated delivery systems. God doesn’t package our probiotics in tiny plastic bubbles; neither should we.

3. Anti-fungals – Prescription anti-fungal creams and suppositories can be very effective for topical or vaginal use. Systemic drugs are also available, but they can be very hard on the liver and kidneys. Natural practitioners prefer to use herbs and nutrients that are just as effective but lack the downside of chemical treatments, such as oil of oregano, grapefruit seed extract, caprylic acid, proteolytic enzymes, butyric acid, black walnut, and wormwood.

4. Detoxification Support – Regardless of whether natural or conventional treatment options are pursued, it is wise and very helpful to provide the body with some liver support to help promote detoxification pathways which are heavily burdened with mycotoxins generated in the dieoff of yeast cells. This will minimize any Herxheimer effects as the body attempts to cast off these toxins.

5. Heal the Gut – This may seem redundant as all of the above strategies are aimed at restoring the digestive process, but as this happens, certain nutrients may be particularly helpful in repairing the integrity of the intestinal lining, such as L- Glutamine, Omega Three Fats and – once progress has been made – Whey Protein Isolate (a great source of pure amino acids, the building blocks needed for repair). Glutamine is an amino acid that is particularly useful early on in treatment, and may also help with sugar cravings.

Yeasts like Candida have been with us all along, but our collective choices have made yeast infections and other types of fungal overgrowth and secondary infections a growing epidemic around the world. For those who have struggled with chronic yeast infections and fungal overgrowth for years, know this:

Because of the intransigent and pleomorphic (spontaneously mutating) nature of the microbes involved (not to mention the secondary infections they invite), don’t expect a first round knockout, but a multiple round epic struggle. With each round of treatment, the fungal load gets a little lower; with each round, the toxic burden gets a little lighter. With each round, the battle field is a little more level until finally the immune system is no longer outnumbered and outflanked.

With faithful determination and by God’s grace, this is a battle worth fighting; it is a battle that can be and is being won.
